I believe this has been discussed before, but now it has it's own thread.

The basic idea, is that all spells should scale in some way. This would make -anns more balanced, and give more incentive to use certain things in late-game. I know this would take alot of coding, so I suggest that it be done slowly over time. I know we have already started with this trend, and it would be nice to continue it. Preferably, one spell would become scaling per major version. (like 8.1, 8.2, etc...)

There is also one more issue. Scaling abilities are nearly worthless until upwards of level 40. The solution to this, is to make things semi-scaling. So basically, 1/4th of an abilities damage would be static damage, and 3/4ths would come from Power. This would only need to be in place on the tier 1 abilities, and whichever tier 2 abilities made sense. The reasons for that is to help lowbies actually do damage sooner.

Example:
Ice Bolt
Static Damage: 25/45/65/85/105
Power based damage: 1.5*power/2*power/2.5*power/3*power/3.5*power

The total damage would be almost unchanged for a level 62, but a beginner would immediately be able to use this to deal damage. There is another viable possibility that I can think of:

Example:
Ice Bolt
Static Damage: 40/80/120/160/200
Power Damage: 1/2/3/4/5*Power

Of course in the second version it wouldn't do BOTH damages. It would be either or. I would suggest it does the static damage until level 25, and then does *Power after that. Hopefully that would again help lowbies actually have power early game.

Disagree on semi-scaling. Team balancing is already terrible. Making low levels do actual damage means that high levels aren't as useful. Already a team of lowbies that are good rock a a few high levels, though this is mostly do to non scaling things - such as Taser/Silence and disables in general.

Even as damage spells would scale up, other things like Taser/Purge would scale down. Meaning that to get that 5 seconds your going to need significant Power. (Or whatever ends up being used to scale Tazer.)

So, this would balance it both ways, and stop making a couple of skills be incredibly good early, and a couple of skills worthless early. Hopefully everything would be decently good at all stages of the game.

if it's going on about being worthless early/later, then that's a tier-ing problem. of course spells are going to suck based on power- that's why you have to level your mage. but putting static damage will really downgrade the need for power, and make stam/ess way more presentable, as stam-stackers will kill glass cannons easy w/out too many points into power.

That is why I suggest the static bonus stop working at level 25, or whatever works out for balance.

the problem with that is that arcane blast will still be doing 150 static damage, and it isn't half bad for lower levels. so would your new static remake be taking this into account?

High level Stamina based Arcane mages are not a problem right now due to the fact that the Arcane book doesn't have enough good spells. The only reason this would be an issue even in other books is because they would actually have the potential to use multiple weak spells to decent effect.
