The Time Is Upon Us Empty
PostSubject: The Time Is Upon Us   The Time Is Upon Us EmptyWed Sep 16, 2009 2:57 am

It's almost time. Within the next 2 weeks, we'll be getting overflowed with new season premieres, new shows, and new media all around. There will be an absolute explosion of new content over the media scene and I'm going nuts trying to keep track of it all. For those of you interested in what I might be interested in new seasons/shows that are coming up, here's a little list for you guys:

Dexter - Season 4, Episode 2 (September 27th, 2009) *
Flash Forward - Season 1, Episode 1 (September 24th, 2009) *?
Heroes - Season 4, Episode 1 (September 21st, 2009)
Lie To Me - Season 2, Episode 1 (September 28th, 2009)
Merlin - Season 2, Episode 1 (September 19th?, 2010)
Smallville - Season 9, Episode 1 (September 25th, 2009)

And for those of you already watching shows that premiered earlier and are currently in-season, here's a little list to keep on track of when they come:

Leverage - Season 2, Episode 10--- [Wednesday] *
Nostradamus Effect - Season 1, Episode 2 --- [Wednesday]
The Vampire Diaries - Season 1, Episode 2 --- [Thursday]
True Blood - Season 2, Episode 13--- [Sunday] *

Yeah, that's right. 10 shows a week. However, that'll soon end when Leverage and True Blood finish up their seasons. Although I don't think it's fair to those who don't have much time on their hands to give you this list without recommendations, so I put some stars next to those that I think are most worth watching (Exception on Flash Forward, as I'm looking forward to it, but not sure how good it is considering it's the first season).

Lack of Dollhouse and House.

Houses in general.

Leverage, Lie to Me, and Dexter are good. (But I don't get HBO so I have to rent and watch Dexter when it comes out on disk.) I'm not interested in the rest.

Overall, I have been very disappointed in television for a long time. Last year there was a short time where there was a total of one good show per night, that was bliss. Since then I've been lucky to get 3 decent shows per week.

For me to watch a show, it needs something interesting. (Like sci-fi themed or otherwise awesomeness.)
It needs something intellectual. (Like a detective story or otherwise thought-provoking subject. Or good writing.)
And it needs comedy. I don't watch melodramatic shows. I am here to be entertained, not depressed.

Sometimes I will watch something that lacks ONE of those three, but rarely. Examples of shows that nail all 3 categories nicely are Chuck and Stargate. (Cool premise, intelligent writing, and interspersed light comedy to keep the drama from being too intense.)

I don't watch a single one of these. How you could ever watch so much TV is beyond me.

Dollhouse comes on January 22nd. That doesn't count as the next 2 weeks.
House comes on September 21st, but I haven't watched all the seasons of it yet. I'll probably get to it after I finish the 4 seasons of Supernatural I have left and the remaining 12 episodes of Legend of the Seeker. Perhaps then I'll get to the 8 seasons of House.

You don't watch them because you don't have time. I, on the other hand, have pretty much 10 hours a day to do whatever I want for about another year and a half. How can I watch this much TV? I don't. I watch interwebs. And interwebs is where my shows are stored.

I don't have...time? I'm homeschooled. I have a TON of time. I spend a few hours playing computer each day, a few doing school, and then the rest reading a book or sleeping. There are very few good shows left. I watched Psych and Good Eats, and that's it.

Flash Forward just pre-aired. Watched half so far, but from what I've seen the first 5 minutes are pretty bad, but then it gets REALLY good. I suggest you all try it at ninjavideo.

EDIT: So yeah, I finished the episode and it's something I highly recommend to anyone who likes mysterious action shows where no one knows what's going on, such as Lost, True Blood, Burn Notice, etc. Really hope some others watch this so I'll have someone to talk to it about.

Oh, and watch the full episode or you wont get the full feel for the show.
  • Starts bad.
  • Gets good.
  • Ends perfectly.

The Time Is Upon Us Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Time Is Upon Us   The Time Is Upon Us EmptyThu Sep 17, 2009 1:33 pm

I think I'm gonna give my review of all the shows you have listed:

Lost: Soap-opera in prime-time set on a mysterious island. Also throw in a couple of buckets of WTF IS GOING ON. It definitely had me lost when watching...

Burn Notice: Action! Yay! Drama! Sob! Repeat.

True Blood: I haven't seen it. The premise of mind reading + vampires coming out of hiding sounds interesting, but I have a feeling it is 30% action/30% sex/40% soap opera. I need the 20% comedy or it fails.

Dexter: Good show. A bit too much cursing and sex just for the sake of cursing and sex and a few characters that get way too intense for no reason. But sympathizing with a serial killer is fun and I like the subtle comedy and/or satire that the characters generate without being overt about it. It also has good mystery to stimulate my mind.

Flash Forward: Dunno, sounds like standard crap. If it's like Lost or Burn Notice then it is a show that takes itself way too seriously and then tries to break up the drama with random action. Bad formula.

Heroes: It started good like a comic book in television form, but also like a comic book it rapidly got far too confusing to follow. The light and fun plots also turned over-dramatic rapidly and all levity and even most of the action got removed. (And no, I don't count the idiot 10 year old mind running around as a proper comedic element.)

Lie To Me: VERY interesting premise based in real life. It has good mystery to make you think and can actually teach you something. Not to mention that the way it's done is WICKED. I love comparing the actors expressions to famous people. Lately it's taking a turn down the dark road of over-dramatic, but the premise and mystery are so good at the moment that it still has me hooked.

Merlin: I can't judge it yet. The fantasy premise and setting look good and it seems to have good action. If it doesn't turn into a soap-opera, I will probably watch it. But if it's the next Battlestar Galactica, count me out.

Smallville: Superman as a kid, but it's a soap opera. It's fun, but I can't stomach it for more than one episode a month.

Leverage: Nearly perfect show. Great premise, great acting, cool action, reasonably thought-provoking, and most of all it knows how to make you laugh. All of the characters, situations, and interactions become hilarious while still keeping you in the plot and caring about what happens. This is how shows should be written. It does have a few flaws occasionally with things the writers overlook and occasional weird moments that make no sense, but I am willing to overlook them for the rest of the awesomeness.

Nostradamus Effect: No idea, haven't seen or heard of it.

The Vampire Diaries: Twilight: The Television Series (In other words, EPIC PHAIL!)

That's just my opinion. I want to leave a show happy and upbeat or deeply moved. When the drama gets too intense it loses my interest and/or just depresses me for no reason. Chuck, Stargate, Mythbusters, and Leverage are some of my favorite shows in recent years because they know how to balance making you think with action with comedy. (And Stargate works in significant dramatic storylines in there.)
