| Well to start us off, I think we should decide on the type/genre of game. More than likely, we'll probably be going for a hybrid. Here are general game classifications.
Action Adventure RPG Simulation Sports/Driving Strategy/Puzzle
And then, I would say each of those have their own sub-classifications. Anyone think of more game genres, that wouldn't be sub-genres?
And after that, do we want it
Sandbox/Open world (A la Fable/Oblivion/Grand Theft Auto) or Story progressive/Pre-made story, illusion of freedom (Sports games would fall under this, as would puzzle games, for RPG/Adventure/Action games, it would be like most typical games where you just follow the storyline).

| Strategy/Puzzle. Perhaps something like World of Goo? | |

| After some thought, a Sandbox game is simply not feasible. It requires far too much work, far too much testing, and we all have other things to do as well. A structured game with the illusion of freedom seems like a much better idea. Pre-planned storyline, with possible options/different endings etc. would be good, but an open game just won't be able to be done, without us quitting prior.
I think either a strategy game with a story line (Portal)(The cake is a lie) or an RPG, or maybe an SRPG (FFT) with some action/puzzles added into it would be good.

| I think there is still untapped potential in things like Portal. Especially a game similar to Portal but with guns and enemies and such. Of course I don't know how to make that unique. | |

| I don't see what's wrong with creating an "already been done" game. It's not the idea that always matters, but how well it's executed. Better idea adds, but isn't necessary. A storyline progression RPG game with an added strategy game that's integrated into the gameplay is not only fine, but even good. Whether it be entirely immersed (Like a SRPG where it wouldn't just be turn based but puzzle/interaction based as well), or a side game that helps (In the same way FF 8/9 had the card game, and FF 10 had Blitzball).
Seriously, think about the fact that we're a rag-tag team, with other things to do, we aren't getting paid, we have a limited amount of coders, a limited amount of testers etc. Why would we try to make the next big thing? It makes sense to start off small, and see if we can even finish that. Hell, I think creating a full blown RPG even without puzzles might just not pull through with the amount of work it is.
Also - it seems people want a mix between an RPG & Puzzles/Strategy, not an RTS.

| It's not that I want to create the next RPG, it's that I want to create something I'd enjoy playing. And at this point, I'm pretty picky. With HoN being my primary game, it's going to be hard to match or go past it. | |

| The general consensus seems to be on some kind of strategic game with rpg elements. I'm not sure a first person game with the engine having emphasis on easy to create objects is necessarily the best fit. Don't get me wrong, it can be done as proved by things like Portal, but it seems like ti could be ackward and/or challenging.
What about something like the Metroid Prime games but with less suck?

| An adventure game with strategic fighting/customization (Such as having to find the right combination of weapons and abilities to make fighting certain enemies easier or even possible period.) and rpg character progression. (Not necessarily level-ups, but getting stronger throughout the game.) | |

| Ya. RPG feel, Action/Adventure game. So like, Oblivion/Fable/Fallout etc....but (IMO) illusion of freedom instead of sandbox so it's ... just easier to handle. | |

| Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind but with less "Side Quests" and a better combat system imo.
Maybe about a quarter of the size of the world...

| For the illusion of freedom thing, just do what Metroid does. To get around requires different abilities which you don't have yet. Finding how to get places requires the right ability and/or some ingenuity. If you take a different path first, you may be able to skip the "puzzle" by having even more abilities. Stuff like that. | |

| If this was still being done, story-wise, what do people think of a Chrono Trigger rip off? It has the potential of all the RPG elements, Illusion of freedom and strategy puzzle stuff that's wanted. It also has a good potential with the whole "you're the bad guy but don't know it".
Or is this whole thing flop?
